In yet another incident of crime against women from Northeast, a 24-year old student from Manipur was allegedly molested and beaten up by two men who also thrashed her cousin when he tried to intervene at Old Gupta Colony in North West Delhi on Friday night.

According to the police the incident took place late on Friday night when the girl along with her cousin was returning to her paying guest accommodation in the area. While they were crossing a park, the accused men started passing vulgar and racist remarks at them. The men, then obstructed her way and groped her. They also allegedly tried exposing their private parts to the girl. Seeing this, the girl's brother got furious and fought back the ruffians but he was thrashed by them.

“A call was made to the police control room at 10-50 p.m. and one of the miscreants was nabbed from the spot. Following a complaint from the victim, a case under sections 354A, 354B, 341and 323 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of the Prevention of Atrocities act was registered at Model Town police station,” a senior police officer said.

Police identified the two accused as Kamal and Manpreet. Manpreet was arrested by the police from the spot.

The victim girl is pursuing her B.Ed and her brother is studying BA from Delhi University.

Following the incident students from the North-East staged a protest at the incident spot. Several police vehicles were also damaged due to it. The students alleged that such incidents are constantly happening and police is not taking any action on it. Some students also alleged that they called up the helpline meant for Northeastern students but it was ineffective.

“The police restored to lathi charge on innocent students as some unknown miscreants pelted stones,” said a student one was a part of the protest.
