In an effort to motivate the youth to opt for the performing arts, Urshilla Dance Company is organising an event, Dance Explosion, on Thursday at the Little Theatre Group (LTG) Auditorium on Copernicus Marg here.
The competition aims to promote young talent that usually goes unrecognised.
According to the organisers, colleges are adopted by corporate houses and sports brands in other countries, but the same is not the case in India. Thus, they want to create a platform where dancers can reach out to them for help. The dance company now has 475 dancers, including 25 groups under its wing.
The event has been divided into four categories and will begin with solo and duet categories, which will see participation by underprivileged children. Post lunch, troupes from the Salaam Baalak Trust, Aarushi, Amar Jyoti Charitable trust and Vicki, the company’s adopted dancer, will perform.
In the evening session, choreography teams from Delhi University will participate. There will be also professional performances by Delhi-based Sadhya Unit of Performing Arts and internationally-acclaimed dancer Rahul Goswami.
The final category is the freestyle category, in which Brooklyn Academy of Dance and Arts will perform, opening the stage to a number of dance teams and colleges.
The judges for the choreography event are Mandeep Raikhy, Chhau artiste Brandy Leary and Amith Kumar from Dance work.
There will also be a talk by traditional and contemporary dancer Santosh Nair.
Most college dance competitions are organised by students on their own and with access to limited funds.
This event changes that, as students get access to professional lighting.
The event begin at 11 a.m.
