Alleged suicide by doctor

April 24, 2012 11:39 am | Updated 11:39 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A senior resident doctor of Lady Hardinge Hospital allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Dilshad Garden here on Sunday.

Smita Rani, a resident of Pocket D Dilshad Garden, rang up her sister Prerna, auditor in the Union Defence Ministry, on Sunday evening saying she was “going” and disconnected the phone. Suspecting something amiss, Prerna along with her brother Lalit rushed to Dr. Rani's house and found the door closed. Lalit cut the mesh of the door with a screw driver and opened it. The two went inside and found their sister hanging from the ceiling fan.

Prerna, who holds a diploma in nursing, tried to revive her sister, but she was dead. A call was then made to the Police Control Room.

Dr. Rani had married Mohammad Sohail Fazal, a resident of Farash Khanna, two years ago. It was a love marriage and the two had got their marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act.

According to the First Information Report, relations between the two had strained and they had applied for divorce in August last.

The police said efforts were being made to trace Fazal who was absconding.

A case has been registered under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498 (A) (husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code at the Seemapuri police station in this connection.
