Alka, Surender ‘surrender’ before Bassi

Aam Admi Party MLAs, Alka Lamba and Surender Singh along with party leaders Ashutosh and Sanjay Singh met Police Commissioner, BS Bassi to ‘surrender’. Both the MLAs embroiled in controversies for ‘misusing their powers’ were recently booked by Delhi Police. While Ms Lamba was booked for trespassing and vandalism, Mr Singh has a case of beating up a civic official.

“We had gone to ‘surrender’ as the Police have registered cases against us while we were working. He gave us a patient hearing and said that the Police will cooperate,” said Ms Lamba, Chandni Chowk MLA. She said that Delhi Cantonment MLA had gone as reports of him ‘absconding’ appeared in the media.

“We people aren’t going anywhere but the police isn’t probing the other side of the case. We had gone to tell him that we aren’t absconding,” she said.

Soon after the meeting, Police Commissioner BS Bassi told media that Surender Singh has assured of fully cooperating in the investigations. “I have also assured them (AAP leaders) that a fair investigation will be conducted,” said Bassi.

The meeting also led to police dropping their plans to move court to seek a non-bailable warrant against the legislator. “We had planned to move court on Wednesday seeking a non-bailable warrant against him but that will not be required now,” said a senior police officer.

The earlier decision to approach court against Singh was taken after he repeatedly failed to join investigations. “He had been called to join investigations multiple times, including today (Tuesday) morning. We sent him six notices, but he met the investigating officers only once,” said the officer.

Singh was earlier booked with two others for allegedly using caste-based expletives against an NDMC official and physically assaulting him. Singh has additionally been booked under the SC/ST Act.

Both AAP MLAs were recently booked by the Delhi Police.
