An alert neighbour foiled an abduction bid in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri on Saturday afternoon, the police said on Sunday.

The 27-year-old accused, Yashpal, was arrested for trying to abduct the one-and-half-year-old girl from outside her house in Mangolpuri.

Drug capsules

“The accused was under the influence of drugs at the time of arrest. He was held by the neighbour and other residents while trying to walk away with the girl. We also recovered several drug capsules from his pocket at the time of arrest,” said a police officer.

“The incident was reported on Saturday afternoon from Mangolpuri. Yashpal was seen taking the girl away from her house. It was then that one of the child’s neighbours chased and held him. Later, he was handed over to the police. We have arrested him and registered a case under IPC Section 363 [punishment for kidnapping] and 84 Juvenile Justice [Care and Protection of Children] Act [kidnapping and abduction of child],” said Rajender Singh Sagar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).

The police said the accused works at a gas agency in Gurugram.

“He came to Mangolpuri in a car provided by the gas agency on Saturday afternoon. It was then that Yashpal spotted the girl playing outside her residence. Seeing no one around, he went up to the girl, picked her up and started walking towards his car. He was stopped by a woman in the neighbourhood. She alerted other locals and raised an alarm. The locals chased and held him. He was thrashed and handed over to the police at Mangolpuri station, said a police officer.

“He has been sent to one-day judicial custody. We will seek police custody to determine the motive behind the abduction. We are also probing his background,” added Mr. Sagar.
