etro travellers in the Capital have a reason to cheer. Passenger fares on the Airport Express Line will be slashed by up to 50 per cent Friday onwards.
According to the revised fare structure applicable from September 18, the minimum single journey fare on the corridor will be Rs. 10, half of the earlier minimum fare of Rs. 20 and the maximum fare will be Rs. 60 against the earlier maximum fare of Rs. 100. Hence, a one-way journey from New Delhi station to Dwarka Sector 21 using a Single Journey Token will now cost only Rs. 60.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said the fares are being decreased to mainly encourage commuters from Dwarka sub-city to travel by the Airport Express Line instead of the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro, which takes a longer route.
This will also help in decongesting the Blue Line, one of the busiest corridors of the Delhi Metro network, especially during the peak hours.
The benefit of lesser travel time on the Airport Express Line will also be communicated to the passengers. A detailed revised fare chart will be available on the Delhi Metro website and at all stations of the Airport Express Line. The ‘Fare Store Value Card’ offered to commuters will have a further discount of 10 per cent.
The fares on the Airport Express Line were decreased by up to 40 per cent on July 24 last year. As a result, the average daily ridership of the corridor increased significantly from around 13,000 in June 2014 to more than 20,000 in February earlier this year. On August 28, 2015, more than 32,000 people travelled by the Airport Express Line. The Airport Express Line, which was built on a public-private-partnership basis and serves airport-bound passengers, has had higher fares as against Delhi Metro's 200-km network.
