Two teenaged girls were killed and their friend sustained injuries in Najafgarh here on Tuesday when they fell off a tractor on their way to college. The injured is said to be out of danger.
Preeti Sharma, 19, Anjali Jha, 19, and Deepika, 18, all students of Bhagini Nivedita College in Kair village, were on their way to the college on a tractor around 10 a.m. They fell off when the tractor driver was negotiating a turn.
“All three were standing on the hook that connects the tractor to the trolley. When the tractor driver took a turn at a cross road, they lost their balance and fell on the road. Preeti and Anjali came under the wheels of the trolley and sustained serious head injuries,” said a senior police officer.
The accident took just 500 mt away from the college and a Police Control Room van stationed near the institute took them to Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital.
Preeti, a second year student of Bachelors of Commerce, and Anjali, a second year student of Bachelor of Arts, were declared brought dead at the hospital. Deepika was later shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
“The girls had reached Najafgarh by a bus and had taken another bus to Mitraon village. Their college is another four km to five km from Mitraon village, but not many buses ply on this route, forcing students to depend on private vehicles. These girls took a lift from the tractor driver in a hurry to reach college and met with the accident,” the officer said.
Anjali was a resident of Uttam Nagar and Preeti stayed in Sagarpur. “The bodies of the deceased were handed over the families after a post-mortem. Tractor driver Virender was arrested for causing death due to rash and negligent driving,” the officer said.
