: Calling the AAP government’s cleanliness drive a “mere photo-op”, the Delhi BJP on Monday alleged that the government was worsening the garbage crisis in the city.

The party trashed the AAP’s special drive to clean up the city with the help of its PWD and DJB staff as it believed the claims of lifting of garbage were “unsubstantiated.”

“AAP ministers, MLAs and leaders of the party have tried to mislead the people of Delhi through their photo-op. Otherwise how can the 91 trucks deployed by the government collect only 93 metric tonnes of garbage? 91 trucks lift just 19 truck loads of garbage in two days – what a scam,” said Satish Upadhyay, Delhi BJP president.

The mayors of the North and East civic bodies said, “Since Saturday evening, the Delhi government has been claiming 91 PWD trucks are working round-the-clock to lift garbage from the roads. Delhi has three garbage dumping sites at Ghazipur, Bhalaswa and Okhla. On an average, one MCD truck makes at least four rounds from any area to its dumping site. On this basis, even if we assume Kejriwal government’s PWD trucks made three rounds a day, at least 400 truck loads of garbage should have reached the dumping sites, which have camera-recorded entry points.”

Alleging “corruption” in Delhi government’s exercise to lift garbage, he claimed the strike-hit EDMC and NDMC lifted far more garbage than the staff deployed by the AAP government. “The strike-hit EDMC and NDMC lifted 934 metric tonnes and 21 metric tonnes of garbage respectively in the last 24 hours,” said Mr Upadhyay. The mayors and Delhi BJP chief also urged the striking municipal employees to end their strike in the larger interest of the people. The leaders added that they will continue with their efforts to meet their demands, even as scores of party workers staged protests in as many as 100 wards across the capital on Monday demanding that the State government release funds for payment of salaries to MCD employees.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta raised 10 questions to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, including: “Isn’t it true that since the very beginning of gaining power, Kejriwal government is treating the three municipalities in a step-motherly way because they are ruled by the BJP? Isn’t it true that Delhi High Court in its judgment dated January 7, 2016 recommended that the Delhi government should give the three municipalities Rs. 2971 crore as part of Third Delhi Finance Commission Report?”
