AAP to move EC seeking BJP MLA’s disqualification

“Ranjit Singh got fake SC certificate to contest polls”

August 15, 2014 12:22 pm | Updated 12:22 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will move the Election Commission next week to seek disqualification of Ranjit Singh, the BJP legislature from Gokulpur (reserved) constituency in North East Delhi, for producing a fake Scheduled Caste certificate to contest the Assembly polls last year.

The AAP’s decision comes after a Delhi court on Wednesday directed the police to lodge an FIR and furnish its copy within two days. A probe report presented to the court earlier had showed that Mr. Singh, originally a resident of Muzaffarnagar, had procured a fake certificate.

“The party has decided to move the EC under the relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act, after having perused the relevant documents, from which a clear case of disqualification is made out,” the AAP said on Thursday.

Asking the BJP about its stand on the issue, the AAP used this opportunity to question the saffron party.

“The issue raises serious questions about the kind of politics in which the BJP is indulging. What is the BJP’s stand on the issue? Will it take action against its MLA who has breached all levels of political decency and has committed a fraud on the weaker sections of society?” asked the party.

“This is not the only case that exposes the BJP, which has been using the President’s rule to have an indirect control over Delhi, so that the acts of omission and commission of its leaders could be brushed under the carpet,” the party added.
