AAP leader’s vehicle attacked, driver assaulted

A gang of masked assailants on motorcycles allegedly assaulted the driver of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Sanjeev Jha on Saturday evening, the police said.

The AAP leader, an ex-MLA from Burari, suspects that the gang actually intended to target him, but they did not find him in the car at the time. The police said they had registered a case of assault against unidentified assailants and investigations were underway.

“The assault took the MLA’s driver Shahid, 22, by surprise because of which he could not note down the registration number of any of the five motorcycles by which the men had arrived. He said the assault took place on a dark stretch of the road, which would hamper visibility in any case,” said a senior police officer adding that the MLA had alleged that the attack was politically motivated.

“When Shahid was returning at midnight, the men stopped the car a little further down Jharoda Chowki and some of them entered the vehicle. They were armed with knives,” Mr. Jha alleged.

They allegedly first enquired about the ex-MLA and on realising that he wasn’t inside, they assaulted Shahid.
