Campaigning for the municipal elections have been taken to the next level by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which on Tuesday started a social media campaign inviting Delhiites to share photos of their electricity and water bills.

The campaign has been initiated to highlight stories of how people have saved money on electricity and water bills after the AAP was elected two years ago.

The campaign, which has picked up with #MyStoryBijliPaaniSaving has, according to the party, received over 500 shares on Twitter.

“People are sharing pictures of their reduced bills and comparing it to the old inflated bills. We have also received videos of people thanking the Delhi government. They have been able to save thousands of rupees because of the government’s move,” a party spokesperson told The Hindu .

In a 35-second-long video, Ritika Gupta shared her electricity bill and said that her bill of ₹882 had been slashed to ₹490.

“The government has done what it promised and I am fully satisfied with the government. They have also promised that they will abolish house tax after coming to power in the municipal elections and I am looking forward to it,” Ms. Gupta said in the video.

More Savings

Another video by Divyani Raidu, a resident of Mongolpuri Kalan, also talked about how the savings made on her bills had helped the middle class of the city.

“There have been no tariff hikes and the savings can be used for other household things”.

Arvind Jha, a Twitter user, said that his bill had come down from ₹2,260 in 2012 to ₹530 this year, which has led to an annual saving of ₹20,760.

The Aam Aadmi Party has been stressing on its accomplishments in the government in drastically bringing down the power tariffs and also supplying free water up to 20,000 litres per household.

They have also promised that if elected to power in the municipal corporations, they will abolish house tax, bring the electricity and water subsidies to tenants, and regularise contractual staff in the municipalities.
