Telling stories from the Indian mythology and South India’s cultural traditions in a contemporary form, the Art Alive Gallery is organising a solo exhibition of S. Nandagopal’s sculptures titled “The Metaphysical Edge of Sculpture”.
Though the 21 works draw inspiration from Hindu mythology and epics, the sculptures are far from being provincial or ethnic.
Nandagopal was among the first group of artists to move into Cholamandal Artists’ Village near Chennai and has been inspired by the rich ancient techniques he practices at the village.
A painter-metal worker-ceramist-turned-sculptor, Nandagopal’s works boast of the use of traditional techniques like enamelling, engraving and silver plating.
Commenting on the show, gallery director Sunaina Anand said the renowned artist has brought in colour in a very distinctive manner.
This, she added, lends itself to forms and figures that emerge in the process of a creative synthesis of the past and present.
The exhibition is on at Art Alive Gallery, S-221, Panchsheel Park, till April 30 from Monday to Saturday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
