Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University staged a protest at the Administration Block on Thursday against the University Grants Commission’s notification, which would lead to a seat cut and change in admission polity.
Demand answers
The students entered the Admin Block and sat along the corridors demanding that the officials answer their questions. Mohit Pandey, JNUSU president, said “After a clear and loud rejection of the the UGC notification, centre-wise delegations came to meet the V-C, but the officials were not available. Only one delegation managed to meet the Director of Admissions and acquainted him with the problems of massive seat cut and blanket eligibility criteria.”
The administration said that on the request of the JNUSU they would meet the office-bearers at 9 a.m. on Monday. The Dean of Students said it was unfortunate that the JNUSU preferred agitation and demonstration instead of fruitful discussion as the letter sent by the administration confirming the meeting on Monday was not accepted by the students’ union.
No nod for lectures
Permission sought by the ABVP to conduct a “lecture on nationalism” was not granted by the administration as it may disrupt the “peace and harmony” on campus. However, some students conducted a symbolic protest outside the Admin Block protest against the “pellet gun attack” on people in Kashmir, tying white bandages stained with blood around their head and eyes.
