February 10, 2017 12:38 am | Updated 12:38 am IST - New Delhi:

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested a Nigerian for allegedly trying to smuggle in cocaine in as many as 90 capsules, which he had swallowed.

Over 1 kg drugs

The accused, Okonkwoh M Tony, was apprehended a few days ago after he landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here from Addis Ababa. He was admitted to a hospital, following which he ejected 90 cocaine-filled capsules weighing 1.3 kg over two days, said a senior NCB official.

Claims of business

The official said Tony had initially misled the NCB saying he had come to India for business while carrying a tourist visa.

“After medical intervention, he ejected the drug-filled capsules. He told investigators that he had swallowed these at a guest house in Lagos and then reached Addis Ababa via Lome (Togo). He was apprehended as soon as he landed here from the Ethiopian capital,” the official said.

According to NCB officials, Tony was to hand over the capsules to another Nigerian national here, whom the agency has been trailing. Tony has been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in what happens to the fourth case of seizure of cocaine by the NCB in Delhi in the last month.
