JNU students say ‘no’ to controversial UGC notification in referendum

February 09, 2017 01:18 am | Updated 01:18 am IST - NEW DELHI:

On Tuesday, the Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union (JNUSU) had conducted a referendum that saw 3,455 participating. JNUSU president Mohit Pandey announced the results saying 3,398 students had voted against the UGC’s May 2016 notification, which, if implemented, will change the university’s admission procedure for M.Phil and Ph.D courses, besides leading to seat cuts.

“Today, V-C Jagadesh Kumar said that only 200 to 300 people were protesting. He also said no seat cuts will happen and that seats in M.Phil, Ph.D courses will be decided on the basis of the UGC notification. If this happens, it will lead to massive seat cuts,” said Mr. Pandey.

‘What will the V-C say now’

“As many as 3,455 students voted, of whom 3,398 said “no” to the UGC notification. What will he [V-C] say to this?” he asked.
