AAP councillor joins Congress

February 10, 2017 12:56 am | Updated 12:56 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Aam Aadmi Party councillor from Nanakpura ward of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation joined the Congress on Thursday, citing disappointment with the party’s conduct.

Anil Malik, who had been associated with the Congress earlier, had contested and won the 2015 bypolls to the Nanakpura ward on an AAP ticket. Of the 13 wards that went to polls, the Congress and AAP had won five each, while the BJP got three. With Mr. Malik’s switch to the Congress, the AAP was left with four councillors in all three civic bodies.

Others in line

Mr. Malik’s move comes ahead of the municipal polls slated for April. Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken, who welcomed Mr. Malik at an event here, said there were others in the AAP and BJP who had been in touch with the Congress and wanted to join the party. Mr. Malik’s wife had contested on a Congress ticket in the 2012 municipal polls, and he had remained close to the party.
