The Capital has already recorded 89 cases of chikungunya so far this year, while there had been no cases of the vector-borne disease till July last year, according to data released by the municipal corporations on Monday.
As per the report, 89 cases of chikungunya, 36 cases of dengue and 15 cases of malaria had been recorded as of May 13. Last year, Delhi witnessed a whopping increase in chikungunya infections, with a total of 7,760 cases being recorded. In comparison, only 64 cases had been recorded in 2015.
Gearing up for the monsoon and the subsequent increase in cases of vector-borne diseases, the Delhi government and civic bodies have ramped up preventive measures.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting last week to come up with a comprehensive plan to combat vector-borne diseases. After the meeting on May 13, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced that the government would make the city “mosquito-free”.
