People were dispersing after attending prayer at a mosque in Shahdara’s Khureji on the occasion of Id on Wednesday morning, when they were hit by a rashly driven car. At least eight of them sustained injuries in the incident, the police said.

Locals staged a protest and disrupted traffic in the area for around an hour, they said.

The police received a call around 8.30 a.m. regarding a white car which had hit several poeple outside Khureji Masjid. A police team reached the spot and took the injured persons to a hospital where all were discharged after first aid.

“The accused driver managed to drive away with the vehicle after hitting several people. We have procured the footage of the CCTV installed in the area. The footage shows the car entering the area and fleeing after hitting the people,” said a police officer.

Agitated over the incident, around 50 people staged a protest outside Jagatpuri police station. The crowd also pelted stones on a DTC bus and smashed its windshield. The protesters left only after police officers assured them of strict action against the accused in the matter.

DCP (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said they have registered an FIR under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving) and 307 (attempt to murder) at Jagatpuri police station.
