7,739 kg of banned plastic bags seized

Acting on the National Green Tribunal’s August 10 ban on plastic bags less than 50 microns in thickness, Delhi’s government agencies and municipal corporations have seized a total of 7,739 kg of such bags, Environment and Forest Minister Imran Hussain said on Wednesday.

Awareness campaign

He added that a total of 492 challans or notices had been issued and ₹2.90 lakh in environment compensation been recovered by the various departments and agencies. On Wednesday, Mr. Hussain took a meeting of senior officials of the Environment Department, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, the Revenue Department, the Urban Development Department and the municipal corporations to assess the implementation of the ban so far.

He added that a public awareness campaign would be started to sensitise people about the need to reduce plastic use.

Public notices, leaflets and awareness workshops would be used.

Hearing on Aug 29

As per the NGT order, anyone found with the banned plastic would be fined ₹5,000 as an environment compensation. The next hearing is on August 29.
