Delhi reported 60 new dengue cases on Sunday, taking the total number of cases to 1,295 so far this season. No death has been reported in the past 24 hours.
“Delhi is facing its worst dengue crisis in the past five years with the number of cases much more than those reported in 2006 when the Capital had registered a large number of dengue cases. The good news, however, is that we are witnessing fewer dengue deaths and are now going all out to ensure that we are able to keep the number of cases to the minimum,'' said Municipal Corporation of Delhi chief medical officer N. K. Yadav.
The MCD claims that it has intensified fogging operations in the Games Village and in other parts of the city and its staff is meeting various residents' welfare association members and school teachers to create awareness about dengue prevention.
According to the data released by the MCD, the number of dengue cases till this time in 2009 was only four. The figure was 92 and 22 during the same periods in 2008 and 2007 respectively. According to the MCD, in the previous years, the total number of dengue cases and deaths were 1,312 and 2 (2008), 548 and 1 (2007) and 3,366 and 36 (2006).
The Capital is also seeing a rise in the number of swine flu cases, viral and bacterial conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis and malaria.
