Acting on a tip-off, the south district police arrested five persons in connection with various robbery cases on Wednesday.

The police claimed to have solved 54 cases of thefts with the arrests of Munirka village residents Roshan Messy (18), Vicky Rawat alia Vikky Landa (24), Sharon Kant (19), Monu (27) and Anju Chauhan (25).

Stolen cash, US currency, gold and silver jewellery, mobile phones, laptops, iPad and scooties have been recovered.

Roshan, the alleged gang leader, is a school dropout and accused of being involved in 16 cases of burglary and theft, the police said.

School dropouts

His father is a driver by profession. Roshan allegedly spent the stolen money on partying with friends, branded clothes, shoes, sunglasses and expensive wrist watches.

The police said that he was a fan of pop singer Justin Bieber and wanted to become an English pop singer and go to Mumbai.

Vicky and Sharon are school dropouts too. Monu is illiterate, while Anju received the stolen property.

The police said patrolling had been intensified following cases of burglary at Shanti Niketan, including theft attempts at the homes of a French diplomat and an IAS officer’s in the same building.

Scrutiny of files on burglars revealed the involvement of the Munirka residents.

Interrogation of three of the accused revealed that they used to steal vehicles for reconnaissance during the day before committing the burglary at night. Further questioning revealed Vicky and Anju’s involvement in the crimes.

The accused allegedly told the police that they had committed thefts in other areas, including South Campus, R.K. Puram, Sarojini Nagar, Saket, Safdarjung Enclave and Hauz Khas. Further probe is on, said the police.
