Witnesses included a traffic policeman who unsuccessfully tried to flag down the offending vehicle which proceeded towards Chanakyapuri. The policeman, ASI Shashi Bhushan, said the accident was reported around 5:05 p.m. Amidst heavy traffic on the busy Ring Road, the sedan came at a high speed from the direction of Vasant Vihar and hit the victim, later identified as Dashrath Yadav, while he was crossing the road. He was thrown a few feet in the air and landed on his chest.

When the traffic policeman and others tried to stop the driver, he drove evasively in a zigzag fashion and hit an autorickshaw before managing to flee.

Mr. Bhushan relayed a message on his wireless set about the fleeing vehicle, but the driver somehow managed to go undetected. The PCR was informed the traffic policemen posted nearby, who rushed Mr. Yadav to the Safdurjung hospital where his condition was said to be serious.

Head injuries

Doctors have told the police that Mr. Yadav has suffered serious head injuries and has fractured some ribs due to the impact. The police said that they were yet to record Mr. Yadav's statement. A case under sections of negligent driving and causing hurt due to negligence has been registered against the driver.
