₹5 crore in old currency notes seized

The Gurugram Police on Thursday claimed to have seized ₹5 crore in old currency notes at Sector 15 here, with the arrest of seven people.

The Gurugram Police Crime Branch recently received a tip-off that a gang in Jaipur was in possession of old currency notes worth several crores and lured them with an offer to exchange the money through a decoy.

When the seven men came to Gurugram on Thursday morning, a Palam Vihar crime team led by Inspector Sajjan Singh raided a house in Sector 15 where they were staying and arrested them. The police seized ₹5 crore in old currency notes of ₹500 and ₹1,000 denomination.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Sumit Kumar, said seven persons were held on charges of cheating and would be produced before a court on Friday. The accused are involved in real estate business. The Income Tax department has also been informed about the seizure.

The accused have been identified as Rajiv, Satish, Sandeep, Rajesh, Dinesh, Amit and Parveen. While Rajiv, Satish, Sandeep and Rajesh belong to Delhi, Dinesh hails from Nainital in Uttar Pradesh. Amit is a resident of Gurugram and Parveen belongs to Rohtak.

Over ₹2 crore in old and new currency was seized in Gurugram till December 30 after demonetisation.
