Three persons were arrested on Monday night for allegedly stealing ₹2.3 lakh from a branch of Syndicate Bank in north-west Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar late on Sunday. The police claim to have recovered ₹2.2 lakh from them.

Tattoo clue

Rahul (21), Rahul (19) and Anuj alias Saurav (23) were arrested within 24 hours, thanks to CCTV footage that showed an ‘R’ tattooed on the arm of one of the accused.

As soon as the Police Control Room received a call, a team lead by Assistant Commissioner of Police Hukma Ram and Mukherjee Nagar police station Station House Officer Anil Kumar Chauhan reached the spot. The team found a window of the branch, located near Banda Bahadur Marg DTC bus depot, broken and ₹2.30 lakh missing.

“All connecting wires of CCTV cameras were cut by the accused to avoid identification,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere, adding that the only clue available was a short CCTV camera clip showing the tattoo.

Names revealed

According to a senior officer, the team questioned the bus depot staff and zeroed in on an employee who had a similar tattoo. “He confessed after sustained questioning and revealed the names of his associates, who were arrested later,” he said. Sources said the trio, who work at the depot, had been planning the burglary for over a month in order to start their own business.
