Intensifying its drive against illegal structures, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed 28 properties and demolished eight unauthorised constructions in East Delhi falling under its Shahdara (South) Zone on Monday.
According to the MCD officials, 28 illegal properties were sealed in Ganesh Nagar Complex, Laxmi Nagar and Gandhi Nagar. An MCD official said: “Demolition action has also been taken against properties in Shakarpur J-Extension of Laxmi Nagar and Pandav Nagar. We would continue to take action against illegal structures.”
The MCD has been conducting special drive against unauthorised constructions in Shahdara (South) Zone taking action against 143 properties there in the last one week alone.
The MCD has put a renewed focus on curbing unauthorised constructions after a multi-storeyed building with two illegal floors collapsed in Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar on November 15 leading to the death 70 people and triggering criticism against the civic body for failing to check mushrooming of illegal buildings in Delhi.
In the first day of the drive in Lalita Park and nearby areas last week, violence had erupted in the locality during which the local Municipal Councillor was allegedly thrashed by residents and a busy road was also blocked as a mark of protest against the civic body’s sealing and demolition drive in the area.
