A 22-year-old woman was found murdered at her flat in Jahangirpuri on Sunday evening. Victim Rinku Devi has 8-month-old daughter Arohi.

The woman’s body was sent for post-mortem and returned to the family on Monday for last rites. The police said they’re investigating the matter and no person has been apprehended so far.

Body found

According to neighbours, Rinku was last seen around 4 p.m. on Sunday with Arohi on the street. After an hour-and-a-half later, the neighbours were informed by their tenant’s daughter about Rinku’s body lying on the floor of her house. The girl had gone to play with Arohi. “The door was latched from outside. When the child opened it, she found Rinku’s body on the floor and Arohi crying,” one of the neighbours Rakesh Kumar told The Hindu .

Rinku’s 25-year-old husband Rajkumar Gupta, who runs a spice stall in the market nearby, was informed. He rushed his wife to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Mr. Gupta’s cousin Sooraj Gupta, 24, said he suspected the role of the tenants who reside on the floor above in Rinku’s death.

“My cousin had an argument with the tenant on Sunday morning as he was troubled due to his drinking problem and had threatened to evict him if he didn’t mend his ways. The tenant’s younger brother, was living with him for the last couple of days, is now on the run,” added Mr. Sooraj Gupta.

While the neighbours suspected a robbery since some jewellery was missing from the house, Mr. Sooraj Gupta alleged it was a case of assault gone wrong.

“I think the person who entered the house didn’t come to commit robbery. He probably wanted to assault the woman but killed her because he couldn’t and was scared of getting caught. Though some jewellery is missing, but everything is as it is,” he said.

He said the police had taken the tenant, his wife, daughter and Mr. Rajkumar Gupta for interrogation. Ruling out the possibility of his cousin’s involvement in her death, he said: “The parents told us that Rinku used to talk to them every day and never complained of fights with the husband. I don’t think he has any role in her death.”

Confirming this, a neighbour said, “We never saw the them fighting. This was a very good family.”

The police said investigations are underway. “The tenant is one of the suspects, but he’s not the only one. We’re investigating the matter and all suspects are being questioned. We’ll apprehend the culprit very soon,” said a senior police officer.
