A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of an approaching train at the Race Course metro station on Tuesday. The victim was later identified as Murtaza, a Delhi University student.

According to the police , the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on the Delhi Metro’s Jehangirpuri–HUDA City Centre Line. Metro services were disrupted for some time after the incident.

“For a long time, the woman was seen walking normally on the platform. When the train approached, she suddenly jumped in front of the train proceeding towards Jehangirpuri at platform number two,” said a CISF official.

“The station being thinly populated, station staff were immediately able to notice her. She was quickly pulled out from under the train and taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival,” the official added. “We recovered a library card from her possession which identified her as Murtaza, a resident of Najafgarh in South-West Delhi. She was a B.A. final-year student of Kalindi College of Delhi University,” said a senior police officer. No suicide note was recovered and the reason behind her extreme step is not clear. A case has been registered and further investigation is on. “Her body was sent for post-mortem and her family was immediately informed about the incident,” said another official.
