In two separate incidents of phone snatching, a Delhi Police head constable and Delhi University Assistant Professor were targeted by bike-borne men in north Delhi.

In the first incident, two men on a bike allegedly snatched the head constable’s mobile phone while he was out for morning walk on Wednesday, the police said.

In his complaint at Civil Lines police station, B. Satyha Narayana, who belongs to Telangana, said he was on the way to his barracks in Old Police Lines when two men on a bike snatched his phone.

He said, “I was on my way back from the park at 8.05 a.m. I was walking on Rajpur Road when two men on a bike snatched my phone and sped off. I could not note down the registration number but I can identify the snatchers. The incident happened near a police booth.”

In the second case, Dyal Singh College Assistant Professor Surya Tiwari was robbed off her mobile phone by bike-borne men near Vishwavidyalaya metro station at 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Minor injury

The incident happened when Prof. Tiwari was on the way to her hostel on a cycle rickshaw. “I was talking to my parents when two bike-borne youth suddenly snatched my phone. I was just outside my hostel on Chhatra Marg. I tried to resist but the snatchers sped away,” she said.

Prof. Tiwari suffered minor injuries in the right eye. She added that several spots on Chhatra Marg are poorly lit and that no PCR van was stationed in the area at the time of the incident. “I registered an FIR at Maurice Nagar police station. The stretch from the metro station to various girls’ hostels located in and around DU campus is unsafe for women, especially at night,” she added.

A senior police officer said two separate cases under IPC Sections 379 (punishment for theft) and 356 (assault or criminal force in an attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) have been registered at Maurice Nagar and Civil Lines police station respectively.

A probe has been ordered in both cases.
