In separate but similar incidents of alleged lapses by the police, two inmates escaped from police custody in north and east Delhi on June 22.

On way to court

According to the police, the first suspect fled after jumping off an auto-rickshaw while the other scaled the wall of a police station.

Neither of them had been arrested till Sunday even as the policemen accused of failing to prevent the incidents face disciplinary action.

The suspect in the first incident has been identified as Sheikh Rajav, who had been held for allegedly committing a theft at a boutique earlier on the same day.

The accused was taken to Lady Hardinge Medical College for medical examination after which, under the watch of a head constable, he was being taken to Tees Hazari Courts in an auto. The accused had been handcuffed.

No lock-up

However, at Azad Market, the auto slowed down because of traffic.

Rajav, who had managed to unlock the cuffs by then, jumped out and disappeared into the crowd.

In the second incident reported a few hours later, a man named Vishal had been arrested by sleuths of the Farsh Bazar police station in east Delhi.

As there was no lock-up in the station, the accused was brought to Anand Vihar, the police said.

On Thursday afternoon, as he was brought into the room of the duty officer for some paper work, he allegedly scaled the wall and fled.
