A Delhi court has awarded 10 and seven years’ rigorous imprisonment respectively to two persons for robbing at gunpoint a huge quantity of jewellery from a house at Paschim Vihar in north Delhi in 2004.
Hefty loot
According to the prosecution, Ajay and Nitin Nagpal had robbed eight diamond bangles, 14 gold bangles, one gold set, five diamond sets, eight gold chains, two lockets, 35 gold coins and one video camera.
The duo had gone to the victims’ house on the pretext of giving them Diwali gift on someone else’s behalf.
Additional Sessions Judge V. K. Bansal awarded Nitin 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, while Ajay was awarded seven years.
No cogent evidence
Though no cogent evidence was brought on record that ₹3.5 lakh allegedly recovered from Nitin’s house and ₹1.5 lakh from Ajay’s house were from the sale of the robbed jewellery, the court still held them guilty on the basis of evidence by prosecution witnesses, including the residents of the house.
At gunpoint
“Both convicts robbed helpless persons at gunpoint and knife-point after entering their house and took away their jewellery,’’ the Additional Sessions Judge stated in his sentence order.
