Miniature scientific models developed by young minds promising solutions to reduce wastage of energy and helping to recycle effluents/wastes, sparkled at the inter-school science exhibition held at A.V.P. Trust National Matriculation Higher Secondary School here on Tuesday.
The district-level event, titled ‘Veettukku Oru Vignyani’, was organised by Puthiya Thalaimurai Group, with The Hindu as the print media partner.
Winners
Students from Bharathiar Centenary Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Udumalpet, walked away with the top honours in both senior and junior categories.
A team of Hema Varshini and K. Yuvarani, both Class XI students, got the first prize for their model developed on ‘Recycling of edible oil’, in the senior section.
In the junior category, exhibit on ‘waste water usage and fire extinguisher’ developed by A. Kalees and S. Deepa, both Class IX students, bagged the first prize.
In all, 120 pair of students from 30 schools in the district exhibited their scientific innovations.
Apart from the winning models, some of the others which stole the attraction were the helmet that reminds the motorcycle rider to wear it and the automatic street light control device.
Helmet
The helmet developed by P. Adhash of Bharathi Kids Kshetralaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School had been connected to the motorbike using a sensor so that continuous alarm sounds if the vehicle was driven without wearing the headgear.
The automatic street lamp control was developed by A. Krishnakumar and P. Vinod Kumar, both Class VIII students of Shri Valli Vidhyalaya Matriculation HSS at Serangadu.
Innovation
“The control panel automatically cuts the power to the street lamps as soon as sunlight falls on it which will help to save a lot of energy even if the authorities concerned forget to switch off the lights in the morning and also switches on the lights once the sunlight fades,” the students explained by demonstrating its working.
Earlier on the day, District Collector M. Mathivanan inaugurated the science exhibition.
