Work to construct a multi-level two-wheeler parking facility has begun at Coimbatore Railway Junction.
The parking lot is coming up on a 60 X 60 ft area and the trade union building on the Goods-Shed Road and Big Bazaar Street corner would be demolished to create space for the parking lot. Earth was dug up for over 10 feet adjacent to the Officers’ Rest House and the present two-wheeler parking lot on the rear side of the junction recently, to lay foundation for the new parking facility.
Total cost
An official from the Divisional Railway Manager’s office in Salem said the project, along with the construction of a new Goods Shed, has been taken up at an estimated cost of ₹3 crore. The multi-level parking lot will have three floors. Each floor can accommodate 500 to 600 two-wheelers. The facility will include ramps for easy manoeuvring of bikes, the official said. Construction of the facility would be finished within five to six months.
As the Southern Railway failed to get a favourable response for the construction of multi-level car parking project under Private Public Partnership model, it has now decided to go in for construction of multi-level parking facility for two-wheelers.
However, the multi-level car parking project has not been shelved, sources said.
