Kumaravalli, 65, a resident of Devangapettai Street, R.S. Puram, was robbed of her jewellery weighing three-and-half sovereign by two persons who entered her house on the pretext of asking for water.
The police said that once the woman went inside to fetch water, one of them pushed her and at knife-point snatched the jewellery. But as she raised an alarm, those in the vicinity nabbed the man, later identified as Abdullah of Mettupalayam Road. The neighbours also handed him over to the R.S. Puram Police.
In another incident in the R.S. Puram police station limits, Vijaya, 44, of P.N. Pudur lost her jewellery weighing five sovereigns to two youths on a motorcycle.
Driver injured
Driver of a police vehicle Sakthivel was injured when the vehicle he was driving hit a car near Walayar on Friday. Inspector of Police Mahendran, who was in the vehicle, escaped unhurt. According to the police, the incident happened when Mr. Mahendran was on duty escorting Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia from Walayar to Pollachi.
Suicide
Chinnadurai, 48, and Velumani, 42, committed suicide at their residence in Kalikanaickenpalayam, near Thondamuthur, on Friday. The Thondamuthur police said that the couple resorted to the extreme step by consuming poison as they lived in penury.
Warehouse gutted
Fire gutted a warehouse in Podanur on Friday.
According to the Podanur Police, fire from a heap of garbage spread to Nanjundapuram resident Majeed’s warehouse, where he had stored plywood and plastics. Trees in the vicinity also were burnt.
