Wide range of opportunities

June 18, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:47 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

Be it joining an engineering or medical course or appearing for banking or law examination, there are several coaching centres, portals, and distance education programmes to prepare the candidates.

“I have a great interest to pursue medical courses. Since the competition is high, it was my brother’s idea to get me into a coaching centre so that I am able to prepare better,” says John, a student of TIMES.

Many like John, especially the ones who try to join engineering or medical courses, are trying their chance to pass the competitive exams and get admission in a reputed institution. Private organisations and the Government are also creating the required facilities to train students.

An executive at the TIMES Institute here says, “The institution prepares students for the common, national- level examinations for engineering, medical, law and banking. However, the success rate depends on the preparation and dedication of the students.” Ashwini, a counsellor in Information Technology (IT) department at NIIT, Coimbatore says, “Courses related to software, which ensure the students are prepared to work for IT company, are taught here. Our institution also provides a separate domain, with a mandatory six month internship, that helps students learn about the real working environment in the IT sector.”

In an effort to help students, some institutes have courses only during the weekends, have some courses online, and involve teachers who have adequate work experience.

Sreenivasan, a counsellor for banking department at the same institute, says that they have tied up with 20 banks to select and recruit candidates from the institute. Since the number of vacancies in the public sector is limited compared to the number of candidates who apply, only the best have an opportunity to get selected. Hence, the aspiring candidates should have adequate training, he says.

For students who cannot afford the cost of joining such private institutes, the Department of Employment and Training organises study circles and provides resource materials free of cost.

According to Latha, Regional Joint Director Employment Officer, nearly 600 students are attending the study circles in the seven districts in this region. The Coimbatore District Employment Office has a library with all books needed to prepare for the examinations.
