Vital organs were retrieved from a brain dead person at a city hospital on Sunday.

Yuvraj (56), a businessman from Tirupur, was admitted to the P.S.G. Hospitals after suffering a stroke. However, scans revealed that he had suffered irreversible brain damage and was declared ‘brain dead’ around 8 p.m. on Saturday. Following this, his family members were counselled on organ donation. After obtaining their consent, a team of doctors retrieved the organs in a procedure that began around 5.30 a.m. and concluded by 10.30 a.m. on Sunday. The liver was donated to a patient at Gem Hospital and the kidneys to patients at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. The Traffic Police created a green corridor, which facilitated the transport of the organs in just four minutes to the respective hospitals.

While Tamil Nadu is a leader in the country in organ donation and transplantation, Coimbatore is among the leading cities in the State.
