They are used to pack hot food items

The ‘Naleya Tirupur Makkal Amaippu,’ launched recently by people from different walks of life for social changes, met District Collector K.S. Palanisamy to express their concern over the continuing use of plastic materials in eateries in the city.

They brought with them plantain leaves stating that they should be used as a substitute for plastic bags to pack food materials.

S. Sundarapandian, the convener of the organisation, said that a large numbers of tea stalls were still giving hot food materials, including tea, in plastic packets. “Packing of hot edible items in plastic materials would adversely affect the health,” he said.

Mr. Sundarapandian is the State spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party too.

He added that citizens were facing difficulties due to the lack of toilets at the temporarily created bus stations in the city.

Three temporary bus stations were created to facilitate the construction of the elevated road corridor near the Old Bus Stand.

“We have requested the Collector to set up mobile toilets in these places,” he said.
