Thanks to Lok Sabha elections in the State on April 24, there might not be power cuts for two days (April 23 and 24).
The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) is taking steps to ensure uninterrupted power supply on these days (April 23 and 24).
According to officials, Coimbatore district has 2,512 polling booths (includes part of The Nilgiris and Pollachi constituencies too).
Though the electronic voting machines do not need direct power (as these are powered by battery), power supply is needed to recharge the laptops that will be used for web casting, and for lights and fans.
Voting will start at 7am and will be on till 6pm.
Officials told The Hindu that local assistant engineers of Tangedco have been asked to collect details of the booths in their area, inspect the transformers and ensure there is no power disruption.
Most of the industries and commercial establishments will not function on April 24 and hence, this is expected to reduce the demand from the units and offices.
There might be higher demand on the night of April 23. However, wind energy generation has improved in the evening hours.
And, hence, there should not be a problem in ensuring uninterrupted power supply on the two days, the officials said.
Since the booths are located across the district, it will not be possible to implement load shedding in any feeder.
All the polling booths in the State will need uninterrupted power supply and the Tangedco was expected to take Statewide measures, the officials here said.
Further, generators available near the polling booths would also be kept ready to meet any emergency need, the officials added.
