Two women held with liquor bottles

The Railway Police on Monday arrested two women passengers who were found in possession of 97 liquor bottles smuggled into Coimbatore from Goa.

A team led by Inspector M. Lawrence arrested the women.

Inquiries revealed that the two women identified as Vairamani (47) wife of late Sekar of Thirupparangundaram in Madurai and her sister's daughter Jayamani (27) wife of Oosappan of the same area.

It was learnt that the duo used to travel to Goa and procure liquor from Madagaon at Rs 150 or Rs 200 per bottle and smuggle them into Tamil Nadu for marketing them in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Madurai areas.

They used to sell the excise duty evaded liquor at Rs 400 to Rs 500 maximum.

The duo on Monday had reached Shoranur from Goa and had boarded the Shoranur Passenger to reach Coimbatore, where they were arrested.
