The district on Monday woke up to two murders – that of an young woman near Pollachi, and an aged man near Annur.
Sowmya (24) was killed by her husband Sivakumar (28) at their house at Aiswarya Nagar in Rangasamudram, near Pollachi, when she questioned his inability to give Rs. 5,000 for her to attend a function on Monday.
Sivakumar reportedly hit her with an iron rod in a fit of rage.
When he realised that she died, he tried to make it look like a burglary attempt by hiding some of her jewellery under a cot.
He told the police that a gang of four masked men forced opened the door of his house, inflicted a stab injury on him.
He was gagged and his hands and legs were tied.
When Sowmya screamed for help, they hit her head with an iron rod and decamped with 60 sovereigns of jewellery and two silk saris, he told the police. A special team constituted to probe the incident, by evening called the bluff of Sivakumar, and he was arrested.
In another incident at M. Pappampatti, near Mopperipalayam coming under the Karumathampatti Police Station limits, a person knocked at the doors of Krishnasamy (75) and Kamalathal (65).
He forcefully gained entry into the house. In a bid to terrorise the aged couple, he stabbed Krishnasamy causing his death.
He then snatched the six sovereign gold chain Kamalathal was wearing and fled from the scene of crime on a motor cycle.
Superintendent of Police E.S. Uma visited the scenes of crime. Canine sleuths and finger print experts were pressed into service.
Ms. Uma has instructed police officials in the district to carry out vehicle checks immediately. All lodges in the district too are being checked.
