Two held for murder

Coimbatore City police have arrested a 37-year-old man and his friend on charges of murdering a retired Cooperatives Department employee. The police said that their investigation into the murder of Nagaraj, 64, revealed that his son-in-law Sivasakthivel and friend Rooban had hatched a plan and executed the crime. Nagaraj, who retired as purchase manager from the Chinthamani Cooperative Store, was found murdered at his residence in Ramanathapuram on September 28.

Sivasakthivel had promised to pay Rooban Rs. 5 lakh to finish off Nagaraj and paid Rs. 10,000 in advance. He cited frequent quarrels with his father-in-law as the reason. On the day of crime, when Sivasakthivel and family were away in Guruvayoor, Rooban strangled Nagaraj.

Youth killed

Mohanraj, 24, of Kurumbapalayam was killed in a road accident on Saturday. According to the Sulur police, Mohanraj, who was riding a motorcycle, lost control of the vehicle and fell off it and landed in a pit. He died on the spot. His friend Saravanakumar, 30, who was pillion riding, sustained injuries and is under treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Hangs to death

Unable to bear the loss incurred in his chit fund business, Kumaresan, 40, of Thanneerpandal committed suicide at his residence on Saturday by hanging. Kovilpalayam police have registered a case in this connection.

Consumes poison

Shanmugam, 61, a farmer of Thudiyalur Anna Colony, committed suicide at his residence on Saturday by consuming poison. The Thudiyalur police said that he resorted to the extreme step as he felt that there was none to take care of him. His first wife lived in Vellakinaru and second in Kinathukadavu. All his three children were married.

One arrested

Suresh of Periyanaickenpalayam was caught red-handed stealing at a house in Poompuhar Nagar. According to the Thudiyalur police, when Suresh was stealing at the house, the resident Ilangovan nabbed him. He then informed the police, who arrested Suresh.
