The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has made considerable progress in implementing the Pilloor augmentation project. According to sources, the Board has finished 20 per cent of the work. The completion of the same has been set for January 2014.
The sources say that the work involves diversion of 65.97 million litres a day (mld) Pilloor water, which the Coimbatore Corporation will surrender once its inaugurates its Pilloor dedicated water supply scheme, and distribute the same to wayside habitations town panchayats and the Palladam Municipality.
The water will reach 440 new wayside habitations.
The sources say with the water the Board will also be able to increase supply for the Palladam Municipality, 16 urban town panchayats, seven rural town panchayats and over 800 habitations. The Board is at present supplying the municipality, town panchayats and the habitations with over 60 million litres a day.
With the augmentation of another 65.97 mld, the Board will supply water at 135 litres per capita a day (lpcd) to the municipality and urban town panchayats, 70 lpcd to the rural town panchayats and 40 lpcd to the rural habitations. The increase in supply is in keeping with the increase in population in the localities and has been based on the 2010 population.
The only additional work, the TWAD Board will do is lay pipelines to convey the water, build balanced service reservoir to balance the water pressure and put in place a distribution network to take water to the new 440 wayside habitations.
The total cost of the project is Rs. 234.92 crore.
The sources say that the Board has obtained funds from the Central and State governments under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme for the municipality and urban town panchayats and Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns and National Rural Drinking Water Programme for rural areas.
The sources add that the Board will also provide house connections, based on the list the local bodies furnish.
