Transgenders do not expect sympathy or special treatment. “Treat us with dignity like any other human being,” says transgender activist, actor and author Kalki Subramaniam.

She was addressing home guards on Ungaluda Thirunangaigal at an event organised by the home guards of the district and Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown to sensitise them on handling the third gender, here on Saturday. “Neglected by parents and peers, denied education and sexually harassed at work places, transgenders were forced to indulge in flesh trade and beg for a living,” Ms. Kalki said.

She expressed the need to have subjects on them in schools and colleges to create awareness of who they (transgenders) were and to wipe out misconception about them. Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District, R.V. Ramya Bharati, and Area Commander of Coimbatore District Home Guards Balaji Raju also spoke.
