Tirupur sub-jail to be upgraded into district jail

December 08, 2013 09:18 am | Updated 09:18 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Government sanction to upgrade the Tirupur district male sub-jail into a district jail, with annexe for women, at a cost of Rs. 995.77 lakh is expected to ease the pressure here at the Central Prison.

At present, Coimbatore Range has two central prisons — Coimbatore and Salem.

DIG of Prisons, Coimbatore, P. Govindarajan said that upgrading of the Tirupur sub-jail into a district jail would help in accommodating all the remand and undertrials and prisoners sentenced for short term.

Tirupur sub-jail at present has a capacity for 60 prisoners and it would be upgraded to accommodate 240 to 250 prisoners. The Borstal School at Pollachi would be shifted to the Palladam sub-jail. Then, Pollachi sub-jail would be upgraded into a special sub-jail.
