Residents of Ward 4 and 7 under the Corporation limits, along with members of Communist of India (Marxist), staged a demonstration in front of the Zone-1 office of Tirupur Corporation on Monday demanding increased supply of drinking water and improvement of drainage facility.
CPI (M)’s union committee member and Ward 3 councillor K. Marappan told reporters that the administration should erect public taps at A.V.P. Layout, Srinagar, Avinashigoundenpalayam, Angeripalayam and Vengamedu areas immediately as the residents were not getting adequate water supply through their house connections. “Besides this, optimal utilisation of public borewells in the area should be ensured,” he said.
The residents appealed to the officials to make functional the public toilet complex constructed at A.D. Colony in Ward 4 and the ration shops set up at Ward 4 and 7 at the earliest.
Another demand was the need for better drainage facilities in Srinagar area to avoid water logging on the streets.
Petition
In another incident, a group of residents of Appiyapalayam under Ettiveerampalayam panchayat petitioned Collector G. Govindaraj seeking his intervention to solve the acute drinking water shortage problem continuing in their hamlet.
S.N. Appusamy, one of the petitioner, said that water supply was totally affected for the past two months and no effort was taken by the authorities concerned to redress their grievances.
“In the nearby hamlet of Thorvallur, there is plenty of water,” Mr. Appusamy pointed out. Mr. Govindaraj assured them to look into the problem.
