The second edition of The Hindu Friday Review November Fest was launched in the city on Wednesday night at the Grand Kovai Ballroom, Le Meridien. Dignitaries from various sections of society participated. Executive Director of Pricol and Managing Trustee of Siruthuli Vanitha Mohan was among them.
“Coimbatore has been traditionally focusing only on industry, healthcare and education for a number of years,” said Sennimalai, Managing Director, Le Meridien. “For a long time, the city did not witness too many music or art-related events. Thanks to The Hindu for having introduced a break in the lives of Coimbatoreans through their music fest.”
He also said that one of the main objectives of Le Meridien was to “unlock art and culture” in the city. “We are happy to associate with The Hindu in the November Fest 2011.”
Mukund Padmanabhan, Senior Associate Editor, The Hindu , pointed out that The Hindu Friday Review November Fest was launched in 2005 in Chennai. “For many years, it was a ‘Chennai programme'. Today, we have reached out to five cities. It gives me great pleasure to be here in Coimbatore, because the response to theatre and music in this city has been fantastic.”
Ms. Vanitha Mohan, along with Mr. Padmanabhan, Mr. Sennimalai and the guest performers for the evening, Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharan, lit the kuthuvilakku . This was followed by a musical performance by pianist Mr. Srinivasan and classical vocalist Mr. Gurucharan.
The evening saw the duo render compositions based on the concept of ‘Mirror on Mirror'. Mr. Srinivasan spoke about the first composition, Kana Kan Koti .
“We wanted to bring out the concept of Western classical and Indian classical music mirroring the same idea.” Other compositions set to ragas Lathangi, Dhanashri and Sankarabharanam were also performed during the course of the evening.
The Hindu Friday Review November Fest, which begins on Thursday, will be held at Corporation Kalaiarangam, R.S. Puram from 7.30 p.m. onwards.
There will be a concert, ‘Adrishta', by famed violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and Grammy-award-nominated slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya on Thursday. The tickets are available at the venue.
