Tension prevailed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning after the family of a nun, who had committed suicide, refused to let her body be taken away for cremation.
Angin Nirmala Reena (26) was a nun at a church in R.S. Puram and third year student of B.A. (English Literature) in a private college in the city. She had committed suicide at her dormitory on Saturday morning.
According to her brother, L. Charles Irudhyay Raj (25), a native of Sowripalayam here, Angin went to become a nun at the age of 16.
She studied in the church’s schools at Madurai, Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district and completed her schooling at a city school after which she joined a college. She had arrived at a church in R.S. Puram four months ago.
In recent days, he claimed that Angin had frequently complained about harassment from another inmate there.
Members had taken up the issue with senior church officials, but to no avail.
Charles, who is working as a supervisor in a private company in the city, alleged that this lack of action forced his sister to take the extreme step.
Further, he also claimed that there was an “inordinate delay” in admitting Angin to a hospital after she begun vomiting due to consumption of poison.
After post-mortem, the church officials tried to take away the body for cremation as she was nun but Angin’s family members refused to allow the body to be taken out and demanded the Bishop come down.
They also took exception to statement by the church officials that Angin committed suicide due to her family situation.
Police officials pacified them. Later, the body was taken for cremation.
No suicide note has been recovered so far by the police or family members.
Angin is survived by her brother and mother L. Rita Mary. The nuns from the church, who were present at the CMCH mortuary, were in no mood to talk to mediapersons.
