Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) plans to open information centres in Coimbatore and Tirupur next month to guide people on power-related issues.

Speaking at the Electricity Awareness Week programme here on Friday, A. Thangavelu, Chief Engineer of TANGEDCO, Coimbatore, said that initially the centres would function for three days a week. Officials would be available to guide consumers on getting new service connections, meter defects, temporary supply, renewable energy products, and application procedures. They would, however, not accept any complaint or application at the centre.

The State Government had identified Coimbatore and Kanyakumari Districts for distribution of CFLs free of cost. The proposal was to give one CFL to each house, starting with hut connections.

This would improve awareness on energy conservation and the programme was likely to start in two months.

The TANGEDCO had distributed 15,000 CFLs in Coimbatore a year ago as part of its energy conservation programmes.

Mr. Thangavelu pointed out that energy demand had gone up in the State tremendously and wind energy generation had dropped during the last few days.

Though there were long hours of load shedding now, about 2000 MW additional energy was likely to be available from November-December from different sources. This would help bring down the load shedding duration.

District Collector M. Karunagaran urged the participants to take up energy conservation efforts and create awareness among their friends on the need to reduce energy consumption.

There was hardly any village that did not have electricity supply in Tamil Nadu. Hence, the demand was high in the State compared to several others.

V. Thirunavukarasu, District Forest Officer, said though energy conservation awareness efforts were on for a long time, it was essential to implement these measures. Small efforts by individuals would have significant impact.

An awareness rally was organised here as part of the week-long programme. The aim was to create awareness on energy theft, electrical safety, conservation and avoiding accidents.
