Engineering graduates should be prepared to take up challenges and bigger problems, Pradeep Nair, Director, Software Group, IBM India, said here on Saturday.
“We are at a deflection point, a moment in history where the country is about to take off in technology. There will be attendant problems, which the students should be ready to solve,” he said at the sixth graduation day of Karpagam College of Engineering.
“Take up bigger problems and do not be confined to small ones and never be satisfied with what you get. Always have an eye on the macro picture.”
Opportunities
He told the gathering that he envied it as it had much more opportunities and faced greater challenges than ever before and asked them not to worry about anything. “The future, I say, is going to be immeasurably bright.”
Using the convocation address as a platform to enlighten the graduates on where technology was headed, Mr. Nair, assisted by a slide show, said there was nothing that technology had not touched upon.
Intelligent
“The world is becoming intelligent and technology has impacted every life – be it mobile phones or washing machines or other items of day-to-day use.”
He then went on to explain how technology and intelligent systems had helped improve traffic flow in Stockholm and Singapore. “There's nothing that has not been infused with intelligence. From washing machines to power grids everything comes with intelligence built-in.”
He spoke about IBM's work with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to attach RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags and track LPG cylinder movements, in pharmaceutical industry and a few other fields.
Growth
On India's growth, he said the country had leapfrogged in technology and had not undergone what the West went through. “We have bypassed a whole generation of technology.”
He told the graduates that the country was young in technology and as young men and women they could use technology in totally different ways.
“Unlike the past, you can use technology in fundamentally different ways to solve problems.”
Principal G. Chandramohan welcomed the gathering. Chairman and Managing Trustee R. Vasantha Kumar spoke on the occasion.
