For the eighth consecutive year, a Namakkal-based school has produced a State rank in the Plus-Two examinations. This year the district produced the State third rank (1,191/1,200) among students with Tamil as their first language.
It is less than the seven ranks produced by the ‘super schools’ of Namakkal in 2013 and six in 2012.
Cut-off marksBut the ‘super schools’ – private schools that have produced State ranks in the past – take credit for producing the major share of centum in the examinations, this year. Of the total 9,876 students who scored centum in the science and computer science groups, as many as 2,551 students had pursued their Plus-Two in Namakkal. This is more than the 25 per cent of the total centum scored by the students across the State in biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science.
Students from the ‘super schools’ have secured more than a third of the total centum in biology and chemistry in Tamil Nadu.
Directors of a few schools told The Hindu that more students were concerned about scoring centum and having a better cut-off score for the counselling, than securing a State rank.
S.P.N. Saravanan, correspondent of Greenpark Schools, which secured six State ranks in the board examinations in the last three years, said that 30 students of the school have secured 200/200 in core subjects.
As many as 36 of them have a cut-off of 200/200 for medicine and 59 have 200/200 for the engineering counselling, he said.
He felt that very few students are determined to prepare themselves for a State rank.
“Many students from a few other schools have also produced students with a cut-off of 200/200”, he added.
