Residents of Kalapalayam village blocked road and later laid siege to Collectorate on Monday demanding that the district administration ensured that the licence of a stone quarry in the nearby area was not renewed later this month.
“The quarry licence expiring on January 21 should not be renewed as it has been functioning in a predominant residential locality and also mining was carried out uncontrollably,” T. Murugesan, who led the petitioners, told the reporters.
They complained that the houses in the colonies like Bapuji Nagar and Bharathi Nagar had developed cracks on its walls.
“The people running the quarry have obtained permission for excavation only over two acres but they are conducting mining over six acres,” Mr. Murugesan alleged.
District Collector G. Govindaraj later told The Hindu that the representations by people had been forwarded to Assistant Director of Mines and Tahsildar (Tirupur taluk).
“The officials have been asked to submit a report to me and based on the observations in it further action will be taken,” he said.
